Southern Europe, as defined by the United Nations geoscheme (the sub-regions according to the UN) comprises the following countries and territories:

  1. Albania
  2. Bosnia and Herzegovina
  3. Croatia
  4. Greece (including: Aegean Islands, Crete, and Ionian Islands)
  5. Italy (including: Sardinia and Sicily)
  6. Macedonia
  7. Malta (including: Gozo)
  8. Montenegro
  9. Portugal (including: Madeira and Azores)
  10. Serbia
  11. Slovenia
  12. Spain (including: Balearic Islands)

and the small states and territories of:

  1. Andorra
  2. Gibraltar (a territory of the United Kingdom)
  3. San Marino
  4. Vatican City
