A Significant OER Initiative - formerly called a Notable OER Initiative by analogy with VISCED and Re.ViCa initiatives - is an initiative to develop OER that in the eyes of experts is regarded as worthy of recording. This is most likely because it is large-scale and/or particularly interesting in terms of politics, pedagogy or maybe even technology.

A Significant OER Initiative can be funded at various levels, but most are likely to come from the higher levels:

  1. truly internationally - eg UNESCO
  2. multinationally - eg EU or COL
  3. nationally - eg from UK
  4. regionally - from a top-level regional structure (province, state, etc) within the nation
  5. municipally - eg from a city or county responsible for education locally
  6. institutionally - from the centre of an institution with specific funding
  7. departmentally - from a Department/Faculty/School/College within an institution.

Initiatives may also be consortial, i.e. from a group of institutions, municipalities or regions.

The focus in POERUP is to collect at least 100 "significant" OER initiatives, focussing on those which are largest-scale, but aiming also to balance across countries.

For a list of the ones we are collecting see Category:Significant OER Initiatives
