The term External environment is used in MIT90s to denote one of the six factors (synonym of category) which have to be balanced when managing the deployment of IT in organisations.

It is a category which is often ignored in the current work on benchmarking in UK HE.

Notice also that all categories project into the external environment beyond the Organisational border, with the exception of Management processes.
